GUEST POST: AN EXPOSE ON SOCIAL MEDIA MOTHERHOOD
Today we have a special guest on the blog!
Stephanie the gorgeous rockstar mama behind the blog Honestly Mommy has joined us to talk about a being a mama in the day and age of “Moms running around, taking photos of their kids, working with big time sponsors, and getting paid to post on Instagram.”
I know you will all enjoy her post just as much as I did!
What is Social Media Motherhood?
Free Products, Paid Collaborations, and Community; but is Social Media Motherhood all that it’s cracked up to be?
If you search that term in your google search bar, you may come up with one or two hits about all the crazy types of social media moms out there who over-share pictures of their children on Instagram, or more likely you will run into a million articles about Disney World and the Social Media Moms program they run (which is cool btw, who knew that was a thing!?).
But if you’re interested in Social Media Motherhood as an emerging job market you will be hard pressed to find an article that talks about it.
Mainly because we’re all out doing it.
Social Media Motherhood is straight up trending.
And it is actually a way to make money for your family.
It isn’t new news that moms have been looking for ways to make money at home for years.
Being a stay at home mom I am always looking for ways to help take the weight off my husband’s shoulders. I’ve tried many things over the years including; private lessons, handmade goods, an Etsy shop, you name it I’ve probably tried it. Yes, I even tried signing up with some of those spammy websites that “pay” you to shop (bad decision btw).
But now I’ve found a new and emerging market that is fun and exciting and offers new challenges daily. Plus, I am paid to work on my own time, I set my rates, choose my own hours, and I get to incorporate my kids into my work life. Sound like a dream? It is and it isn’t folks.
I’m not going to lie to you, being a Social Media Mom is harder than I thought.
I went into this with rose colored glasses anticipating an easy startup and for sponsors to start flooding my inbox with offers. Yep, that totally didn’t happen.
I’ve found that growing can be a slow and painstaking process and you go backwards more than you go forwards most days, but if you stick with it, you’ll find that you slowly gain real and engaged followers and grow a community of women that you adore.
I don’t think that Social Media Motherhood is for everyone, actually, I’ve watched a lot of moms get overwhelmed and burnt out by it. It may be something you think you want, only to get into it and find out it taints the beauty of Instagram for you, and that’s okay.
But if you are like me and you’re looking for a few ways as a stay at home mom to work from home, this is an avenue you might want to consider.
I recently posted my May and June Income report where I laid out how I made more than $2,100 in cash and merchandise in just two months. Now, it’s not all straight cash, but, I do find that because I’m receiving so many amazing products from companies I don’t feel the need to go out shopping which sounds silly but is saving us lots of money!
You all know how tempting it can be to just take a leisurely stroll through Target which ends up with a cart full of new outfits and home goods; but what if that was all being shipped to you for free!? Temptation goes right out the window friends.
On top of that, I love partnering with companies like Kinbe who are raising money to help orphans in Guatemala; I am inspired by these companies run by strong independent women who are looking to make a difference in the world. I love helping them achieve their dreams and coming up with new ways to photograph their merchandise. It’s a thrill every time I get to partner with a new upstart company.
Lastly, as you begin your journey into Social Media Motherhood, know that you will find community and make friends.
This, was shocking for me.
I saw all the follow Friday’s and Mom Crush Mondays and rolled my eyes as these women gushed over each other. But then I joined the community and one sweet mama reached out to me and bam, from there it was history.
I’ve made genuine friends through this Instagram community and have many mommies that I love to keep up with and who I know actually take an interest in my life. It’s crazy, but I can actually have an adult conversation during nap time -Praise God!
Now don’t go thinking Social Media Motherhood is all rainbows and unicorns, it’s not. It’s hard and it can be stressful some days.
Some days I love Instagram and others I want to press delete and walk away with my hands thrown up in the air.
If you’ve experienced the drop in engagement lately due to the algorithm change, or the sheer anxiety in putting yourself out there day after day, or felt the sting of the cold shoulder, then you probably know why I say that.
Although I love working as an Instagram Influencer, it’s also a job, and I work hard. I know that may be surprising to people, but I put a lot of thought, effort, and heart into my posts not to mention time. Somedays my emotions feel shredded when I post something meaningful and am met with silence or a “so cute” and i’s clear no one took the time to read the caption. It hurts.
I always strive to be as honest as my name, but of course it’s social media so people will perceive me however they want to and there’s nothing I can do about that. My hope is to just continue to be myself and attract people who are interested in being a part of the journey.
Being a Social Media Mom is hard, but in my opinion, the good out weighs the bad and if you don’t allow it to take over your life, but just be a piece of it, it can truly be a beneficial thing for your family.
Social Media Motherhood is here to stay.
It’s having a support system that goes beyond just immediate friends and family, it’s an emerging job market, and a way for stay at home moms to make money.
As I’ve learned first hand, don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it friend.
